(792 posts)That's the name of the Netflix docudrama on Ted Bundy. It is told largely through the perspective of his wife who believed in him or tried to believe in him right up to his execution, even though it was making her almost psychotically miserable. It's amazing how much Bundy reminds me of a young Trump with the ease he lies, uses and betrays people around him especially those who trust him the most. And especially how he could continue to lie, even in the face of overwhelming evidence against him.
The media was obsessed with Bundy. They were fascinated by his boastful confidence man charm, his assurances of innocence in the face of often overwhelming evidence linking him to unbelievably heinous crimes against dozens of women. But the media wasn't supporting him. Bundy, without the benefit of 24/7 hate radio singing his praises and a massive news network trumpeting his greatness and repeating his lies, still had a large fan club enchanted by him. There were many men and women who believed his claims of innocence and victimhood and were ready to defend him or be seduced by him, no matter what he did.
There were lots of people though that immediately saw what a wicked, evil and vile human being he was. The movie's title was a quote from the judge who sentenced him to death but who also said he bore him no ill will and bemoaned the waste Bundy had made of his life. I didn't get that. I thought of the lives he had ended, ruined, shattered without a glimmer of remorse. I remember at the time, trying to be a good hippie liberal and opposing the death penalty..... until Ted Bundy came along. But I also remember thinking that maybe he didn't kill all those young women because I could not conceive how one person could be that evil. I know better now.
I think Trump is that evil. I remember despising him the first time I ever saw him speak on TV. I saw a totally shallow, arrogant prick who thought he was better than everyone else and whose evil smarm was especially directed towards women. I remember wondering how anyone could watch him on television and not see that he was utterly untrustworthy and capable of almost anything.
I still believe there is almost nothing he hasn't done or wouldn't do to satisfy his own desires, protect himself or advance his own interests. Start WW3? Yes. If his generals let him. Destroy the environment? In a heart beat. Start a second American Civil War? Without a doubt. Raping children? Absolutely. And for some reason there are millions of Americans who will let him do those terrible things or even help him do them. That is the evil force driving Trump along. And that scares me far more than he does.
