...not stowed away safely and locked is a liability issue waiting to happen or a wrongful death suit. And as for the "protection argument", that does the opposite. It makes it a target for thief's to break in, take and sell illegally, not to mention put your life in danger while they are holding them when you discover them looting you. Not smart on any level.
