In reply to the discussion: Jimmy Carter is a more decent human being that any ReTHUG [View all]merrily
(45,251 posts)17. Why mention only Democrats? "In fact" most of the nation has a "long, rich
rich history of racism" and about half of the nation has been Republicans, under one party name or another.
Jimmy Carter a recovering racist? I am no unconditional fan of any politician, but, Carter is a more decent person than most politicians ever even aspire to be.
He must have been well over it by the time he was in state politics.
During his years of public service at the local, state, and federal levels, Carter's policies contained a unique blend of liberal social values and fiscal conservatism. He emphasized comprehensive reform and stressed efficiency and economy, advance planning, and rational organization. He also championed equal rights for all Americans, especially women and minorities, and basic human rights for all people. In 2002 Carter won the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian efforts.

The write up goes on to say that he was defeated because of his equal rights policies when he first ran for statewide office and nonetheless ran on the same policies the next time. And Lord knows, he's helped people of every conceivable hue in his post presidency.
Strom Thurmond, on the other hand was so racist he could not acknowledge or care for his own biracial daughter, racist, delinquent, cruel father to the bitter end. Was so mad at Truman for integrating the military that he broke away from his party and ran against him. Yet, Republican politicians in Congress feted and praised him until they finally were held to account for it.
And, of course, there was Reagan's campaign adviser, Lee Atwater. Since I won't put the N word here and it is spelled out over and over in his wiki, I direct you to his wiki. Look for the subhead "Southern Strategy."

And, of course, after Obama was elected, that party went batshit racist as a national strategy.
If you want to say Douglas was more racist than Lincoln, I'm right there with you. You want to say the Democratic Part is more racist than Republicans or that Carter today is only two steps above an average rethug, like POS real life thug and crook Issa, you'll be laughed off the board.
Speaking of boards, I googled "recovering racist." FREEP was the first hit google gave me. "Just a fact, nothing else."
Well he may be decent now
but he is a recovering racist. In fact the Democratic Party has a long, rich history of racism. Just a fact, nothing else. And yeah, now he's a couple of steps above the modern rethug. I'll agree to that.
