(45,251 posts)I really was just curious as to which lie you were referring to, that's all.
He is not so much my hero as someone for whom I felt fondness, whether I wanted to or not. And he did do an enormous amount of good for the country while in the Senate.
Didn't have to work a day in his life, but gave the country years of service, including serving in the Korean War after his family had lost a son in World War II.
Whether we want to admit it or not, most of our so called heroes in politics have been a pretty mixed bag, even Lincoln. Washington was supposed to have been a serial adulterer who just may have married cougar Martha for her money. Who knows? Historians would not have dreamed of show the warts of someone like Washington back then. It's a relatively new thing.
Where we go wrong, I think, may be overlooking their warts ourselves, instead of recognizing that they are all pretty much mixed bags.
