(2,970 posts)But I was raised to think of them as inferior to whites. I grew up in SC in the days of separate water fountains for blacks and whites. Separate water fountains, separate schools, separate seating areas in the theaters, separate everything. It was like something bad would happen to you if you came to close to black people, but I didn't know what it was that would happen. I think I began to feel that this thing just wasn't right when I saw photos of protesters being hit with fire hoses and attacked by dogs. By the time George Wallace stood in the doorway of the University of Alabama, I was pretty well convinced I didn't want to be on any side he or his kind was on. I married in !967 and was able to be with my Air Force husband at his postings. During that time i met and worked with people of color and hispanic people, some of the most fun people to work with ever. So I think I've evolved beyond my racist upbringing. I certainly hope I have.
