(20,176 posts)38. The speed of a train is sufficient that it's often almost on top of you before you hear it.
Combine that with a stopping distance that can be as much as a mile or more for a freight train weighing a few 100T and you've got a recipe for disaster. Generally you can hear a train a 1/4mi. away...a train moves that distance in seconds. They're not as loud as you'd think...most of the noise is perpendicular to the tracks and localized.
