Way way back when, I found Jimmy Carter's obvious religiosity irritating. I thought he was like every other fundamentalist that I had met and held condemnatory and hostile attitudes towards all who are not like him. In my defense, I was going to university at a school that was in a town that is arguably the true buckle of the Bible belt. There are five Bible colleges in Springfield Missouri. Count them five. Back then I found myself in an environment where I was surrounded by some of them meanest nastiest most judgmental people I've ever encountered in my entire life. This made me instinctively loathe all fundamentalists because they loathed me.

So, I'm ashamed to say I voted for Gerald Ford. This is the only time I have ever voted for a Republican for any office.

What I did not understand at the time was that Jimmy Carter is the closest thing to a true Christian that I've ever witnessed.

If there is a God Jimmy Carter is his representative on earth. He is absolutely fearless and absolutely honest and absolutely good. I wish we could keep him forever.
