Actually, I find the topic of domesticated animal genders (if that's the correct term) interesting. Unless people have grown up on a farm, they usually have no idea how much human intereference occurs in the sex lives of domesticated animals (particularly when it comes to the males). Examples:

Female bovine = heifer/cow
Male bovine = bull
Neutered male bovine (snip, snip!) = steer

Female horse = mare
Male horse = stallion
Neutered male horse = gelding

Female chicken = hen
Male chicken = rooster
Neutered male chicken = capon

Female pig = sow
Male pig = boar
Neutered male pig = barrow

Female sheep = ewe
Male sheep = ram
Neutered male sheep = wether

Et cetera, et cetera.
