it's similar to deer--used for both singular and plural. (Which raises another question: Why are words that are the same in the singular and the plural so often names of animals, such as deer, moose, sheep, swine, and bison? I have no idea. )

On a much darker note, it's worth mentioning that when humans have been treated as domesticated animals--that is, in slave-holding societies--this practice of neutering males was applied to them, as well.

Female human: woman
Male human: man
Neutered male human: eunuch

The world, and human history in particular, is pretty bizarre.
