In reply to the discussion: Anyone else only rent? [View all]captain queeg
(10,434 posts)9. I sold my last house about 8 years ago. Just when prices were beginning to skyrocket
Sometimes I beat myself up, the value has gone up at least $100k since then, probably a loft more. But I was getting old and couldnt do all the maintenance and upkeep so always had to pay others. That adds up and like people have stated every year there were big ticket items. Im ok renting, Im not very materialistic and dont need much now that my son is older and gone. Try not to second guess yourself based on what might have been.

You get tons of tax write-offs for those expenses though which means a big refund check yearly...

In other words, you get quite a few deductions from ownership, that you don't get from renting.

Yep it's always something. The only advantage is the mortgage stays the same.

I have rented most of my life, paid mortgages on property but personally received no equity

Well, good luck on finding that cheap condo. The monthly condo fee could eat up any savings you might score.

I'm pretty sure I couldn't take care of the house by myself. And every time I thought I might, somebody said $7000 roof
