So many people on the diabetic forums have mentioned that their vets didn't make a connection between the glucose levels and the hind end weakness. I'm glad you are moving on, moving forward, and feeling more confident.

What's important too is protecting his joints while his leg muscles are weaker, because there's extra strain on the joints right now and it's easier to rip a tendon, etc.
