14. Naiditsch - Rapport, Group B, Round 11 (the mother of all analyzed games)

Herr Niaditsch surpassed Rapport Ur to grab the lead in Group B with this late-round victory. It is a good example of planning and execution.

This move is a mistake. It limits the mobility of Black's Bishop and, to a lesser extent, the Knight. Black's pieces are now like roaches in a trap: they've checked in, but they won't check out.
Better is [font color="red"]37...Kg8 38.Be5 Kf7 39.Ng3 Nf8 40.Bb8 Ke8 41.Bd6[/font] still leaves Black's pieces with some freedom. It is worth Black's time to consider sacrificing a pawn in order to activate the Bishop.

Seal off the position with Black's Bishop inside its pawn chain;
Before putting the last brink in the wall, get the White Bishop outside of its pawnchain where it will deny the use of dark square to Black's King; and
Transfer the White King to the queenside in order to assist in a pawn break through.

If White can execute all of these steps to perfection, he has good winning chances and even if he is only partly successful, he won't lose.

38.h6!

White wastes no time getting started.
Now we're going to do something a little different. Insted of merely stating that White has a vastly superior position and noting in each successive note how his position has improved until his position is clearly won, my staff and I have decided to boldly declare that the position diagrammed ater Black's 37th move is won for White (Houdini gives White a small advantage) and, by following the plan outlined, White will have no difficulty winning. This requires that subsequent notes be demonstrated out to a point where the win is more than clear, often taking the variation to mate. Although we also furnish variation that White does not or cannot win, these are always the result of inaccurate play on White's part. From here out, if White makes no mistakes, he wins.
