New OH-SEN poll (Emerson: A-) Vance +3

The first Emerson College Polling survey of the November US Senate Election in Ohio finds Republican nominee JD Vance with 45%, over his Democratic opponent Tim Ryan at 42%. Four percent plan to vote for someone else and 10% are undecided.

Spencer Kimball, Executive Director of Emerson College polling said, “A gender divide exists in the race for US Senate; women voters support Ryan over Vance, and male voters support Vance over Ryan. That said, male voters break at a more significant 20-point margin for Vance, whereas women voters break for Ryan by a 15-point margin.”

Kimball continued, “Both Vance and Ryan have strong bases of support, and the race tightens to a one-point lead for Vance among the very motivated and very likely voters in Ohio, whereas Vance leads by a larger margin among somewhat likely and somewhat motivated voters.”

While Vance leads Ryan in the ballot test, he trails his opponent on favorability; 50% have a very (27%) or somewhat (23%) favorable view of Vance whereas 54% have a very (33%) or somewhat (21%) favorable view of Ryan. Vance is also seen more unfavorably than Ryan; 41% have a somewhat (15%) or very (27%) unfavorable view of Vance, whereas 36% hold a somewhat (16%) or very (19%) unfavorable view of Ryan.

Local Alabama GOP Branch Says Logo With KKK Imagery Was an 'Error'

https://twitter.com/carlavanzandt/status/1560070464004771840

A local branch of the Alabama Republican Party put their foot in it over the weekend by posting an illustration of the GOP elephant to their Facebook page that very clearly featured Ku Klux Klan hoods. Lawrence County GOP Chairwoman Shanon Terry apologized Monday, blaming the offensive slip-up on some sloppy Googling. “A google search picture of a GOP elephant was used and later found to have hidden images that do not represent the views or beliefs of the Lawrence County Republican Party,” Terry wrote. “As chairman I take full responsibility for the error.” Ironically, the image was ripped from a 2020 Mother Jones article calling out racism within the party. “Shame on the Lawrence County Republican Party for this disgusting image,” tweeted Rep. Anthony Daniels (D-AL), putting the local chapter on blast.

Jan. 6 Grand Jury Has Subpoenaed White House Documents

Source: New York Times

Federal prosecutors investigating the role that former President Donald J. Trump and his allies played in the events leading up to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol have issued a grand jury subpoena to the National Archives for all the documents the agency provided to a parallel House select committee inquiry, according to a copy of the subpoena obtained by The New York Times.

The subpoena, issued to the National Archives in May, made a sweeping demand for “all materials, in whatever form” that the archives had given to the Jan. 6 House committee. Those materials included records from the files of Mr. Trump’s top aides, his daily schedule and phone logs and a draft text of the president’s speech that preceded the riot.

It was signed by Thomas P. Windom, the federal prosecutor who has been leading the Justice Department’s wide-ranging inquiry into what part Mr. Trump and his allies may have played in various schemes to maintain power after the former president’s defeat in the 2020 election — chief among them a plan to submit fake slates of pro-Trump electors in states actually won by Joseph R. Biden Jr.

The subpoena was not related to a separate investigation into Mr. Trump’s retention and handling of classified documents that were removed from the White House at the end of his tenure and taken to Mar-a-Lago, his private club and residence in Palm Beach, Fla. That inquiry led this month to a court-approved search of Mar-a-Lago during which federal agents carted off several boxes of sensitive materials.

Priorities USA Action spends $2M targeting young people with voter registration ads

Source: Politico

Priorities USA Action, a leading Democratic super PAC, is rolling out a $2 million digital ad buy focused on voter registration this fall — specifically targeting voters under 34.

The digital ads, details of which were first shared with POLITICO, will resemble content seen on TikTok and other social media platforms. The ads will run on Facebook, Instagram and Hulu through October, targeting younger voters who may have let their voter registration information lapse. They’ll air in Arizona, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan and Nevada, a slate of states that feature both competitive congressional races and gubernatorial races.

The ad buy is part of the super PAC’s $30 million spending commitment ahead of the November midterms, investments that will go exclusively to digital ads. Priorities USA did the same in 2018, spending more than $50 million on digital ads, after Democrats were significantly outspent online during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Younger voters, in particular, lean Democratic but tend to vote at lower levels in midterm cycles — though 2018 and 2020 stand out as exceptions to the general rules about youth turnout. Under-30 voters turned out at historic rates in both of those elections, and Democrats are hoping to tap into that constituency again to help them weather a difficult midterm environment.
