(34,608 posts)It's like a weird cult. Back in the early 1980's, I worked at a florist (a cousin of Rich DeVos owned it) in the green plant department and we'd go out to homes and businesses to maintain their indoor greenery. Every time we'd go to Amway I'd get the creeps. On one wall of the reception area, in a recessed, darkened alcove, was a portrait of Richard DeVos and, on the opposite wall in an identical alcove, a portrait of Jay Van Andel. What was so creepy about that? There were six lights that looked like candles, three on each side of the portraits, like an altar, softly flickering in the darkness like they were holy shrines at The Vatican or something. The weirdest thing I've ever seen in my life.
And then there was the time I completely shredded my hands tying 1,000 roses in those little water tubes to rose bushes at the Van Andel's for a garden wedding in August. Apparently, there weren't enough roses blooming for them. We were coerced by the owner into helping the floral department setup for the wedding. We didn't even get overtime for it.* I think that might be the most ridiculous thing I've ever done, because the rose garden looked lovely to begin with. It looked garish afterwards, which was no surprise to me. "New money" and all that. Their taste in home decorating was only slightly less ghastly than trump's.
*I and a couple other folks that worked in the plant department ended up complaining to the Michigan Department of Labor for this and other sleazy things the owner tried to pull to avoid paying us. We were awarded a substantial amount of back pay and he had to pay a hefty fine. What a sleazeball he was.
Good times, sigh.
