Unless we give partial credit for spelling.

They didn't find core materials. No uranium... or cesium... let alone plutonium or strontium. They found tritium.

Tritium is Hydrogen... it's part of the water molecule... so it can go wherever water can go.

Which necessarily includes the water table.

Tritium is by far the most common release from an operating reactor (though less common in bwrs)...so this could even be decades-old.
