Mom was fine after Dad's death - she knew it was his time. He wanted to get to 90 and managed to live six months after his birthday. He was active right up to the last day he was aware and didn't linger long after his brain gave out.

Since Dad passed, Mom's Alzheimer's has accelerated. Her whole world was upended and she pretty much has given up. In some ways it's kinder for her even though it's hard on the rest of us. At least her physical health is good.

On the other hand, my MIL's brain is great but her body is giving out. She's been in the hospital since December 29 and may never be able to go home again. My husband has spent much of January in his hometown helping his siblings take care of her affairs.

So I'm a little down today. It used to be a day to celebrate.

Excuse me - I need to go do something to cheer up.
